Lille fell 2-0 to Auxerre at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, dealing a blow to Bruno Génésio’s push for automatic Champions League qualification. Christophe Pélissier kept his side in a 4-2-3-1 and, despite ceding 73 percent possession, the visitors departed with three priceless points thanks to Lassine Sinayoko’s brace.
Auxerre believed they had struck first on 24 minutes when Sinaly Diomandé finished from close range, only for VAR to intervene. Lille failed to heed the warning and Sinayoko converted a direct break in the 32nd minute to reward Pélissier’s compact plan.
Lille’s frustration grew before the interval. Hákon Arnar Haraldsson collected a yellow card for a foul in the 40th minute, Nathan Ngoy followed at 43 minutes, and the hosts looked rattled at the break. Génésio responded with a triple substitution right after half-time, sending on Olivier Giroud, Ethan Mbappé and Calvin Verdonk, but the structural issues remained.
Gideon Mensah and Lamine Sy kept closing Lille’s wide routes, Donovan Léon produced three saves and was cautioned for time wasting in the 81st minute, and Mbappé’s three key passes could not unlock the Auxerre block. Danny Namaso, booked in the 67th minute, made way for Josué Casimir five minutes later to refresh the visitors’ press.
The decisive blow arrived in the 90th minute when Mensah burst forward and squared for Sinayoko to finish again. The win lifts Auxerre to 34 points, two clear of the relegation play-off place currently occupied by Nice. Lille remain on 61 points, just one ahead of Lyon in the race for an automatic Champions League berth, with Benjamin André also cautioned for dissent in the 60th minute.
Sékou Mara won eight duels before Marvin Senaya replaced him in the 82nd minute to secure the right flank, and Diomandé helped shut down Giroud after the break. Lille’s final throw of the dice saw Gaëtan Perrin replace Haraldsson in the 82nd minute, but the pattern of the match never shifted.
