Leeds 1-0 Brighton: Calvert-Lewin strikes late to stretch Farke’s run

Leeds kept their surge alive with a 1-0 win over Brighton on Sunday. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in the 90th minute with Leeds’ lone shot on target, nudging Daniel Farke’s side up to 47 points and stretching their unbeaten league run to five matches.

Farke stayed with a 3-5-2, keeping Karl Darlow behind the back three of Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jaka Bijol and Joe Rodon. Daniel James and James Justin patrolled the flanks, while Ethan Ampadu screened the midfield alongside Anton Stach and Ao Tanaka. Fabian Hürzeler countered with Brighton’s familiar 4-2-3-1 setup, and his team controlled 66 percent of possession as Leeds sat compact.

By half-time the only reason the score remained level was Darlow. He finished with seven saves, repeatedly denying Pascal Groß and Ferdi Kadıoğlu as Brighton piled up 3.06 expected goals and 15 shots inside the area. Rodon and Bijol kept blocking efforts that slipped past the goalkeeper, and Ampadu’s positioning in front of them choked off the space Brighton sought between the lines.

Farke reacted decisively on the hour with a triple change, sending on Lukas Nmecha, Sean Longstaff and Wilfried Gnonto for Brenden Aaronson, Ao Tanaka and Daniel James. The tweak finally gave Calvert-Lewin support, with Gnonto running directly from the left and Nmecha linking centrally. Joël Piroe replaced Stach in the 74th minute to offer a counter-attacking outlet.

Brighton still looked the likelier winners after Hürzeler introduced Diego Gómez and Georginio Rutter on 65 minutes, then Yasin Ayari and Charalampos Kostoulas with eight minutes left. Kostoulas, in particular, drew another reflex save from Darlow, but Leeds held firm. When a loose ball dropped to Calvert-Lewin in the 90th minute, he took a touch and finally beat Bart Verbruggen.

Sam Byram entered for Bornauw in the 90+1 minute to close it out. Solly March replaced Yankuba Minteh at 90+3, and Calvert-Lewin’s yellow card for delaying the restart in the 90+7 summed up the tension. Leeds were not letting this slip.

The result leaves Brighton on 53 points in seventh, their Europa League berth still unconfirmed. They dominated possession and chance creation but lost their shape on turnovers, something Hürzeler must tidy before the final weekend. Leeds, meanwhile, have turned Elland Road into a test again; this was their ninth home win of the campaign, built on organisation and a goalkeeper in form.
