Bournemouth held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium on Friday night, a result that leaves Erik ten Hag’s side third on 55 points, four clear of fourth-placed Aston Villa while Manchester City sit six points ahead with a match in hand. Andoni Iraola’s team remain tenth on 42 points.

Ten Hag retained his 4-2-3-1 shape with Bruno Fernandes operating behind Bryan Mbeumo and the Casemiro-Kobbie Mainoo axis screening the back line. Bournemouth mirrored the structure, Alex Scott anchoring midfield with Ryan Christie given licence to roam. The first half brought control without penetration, although Casemiro’s booking in the 28th minute showed how committed United’s midfield had to be in breaking up Bournemouth’s 55 per cent share of possession.

The tempo rose after the interval. Fernandes struck from the penalty spot in the 61st minute after Matheus Cunha’s deft run drew a foul, and the captain produced three shots on target as he tried to steady United. Bournemouth responded six minutes later when Adrien Truffert overlapped down the left and delivered for Christie to steer in the equaliser in the 67th minute.

United regained the lead in the 71st minute as James Hill diverted the ball into his own net under pressure created by Benjamin Šeško seconds after the striker had replaced Mbeumo. The visitors looked set to close it out until Harry Maguire was dismissed in the 78th minute for denying a clear scoring chance on a Bournemouth counter.

Iraola had already injected Adam Smith, David Brooks and Eli Junior Kroupi on 73 minutes, and the substitutes changed the momentum. Kroupi calmly converted an 81st-minute penalty, earned in the aftermath of Maguire’s red card, to make it 2-2. Ten Hag countered by introducing Manuel Ugarte for Casemiro and academy defender Ayden Heaven for Cunha in the 82nd minute, and United saw out the closing stages despite late yellow cards for Smith at 90+2 minutes and Šeško at 90+5 minutes. Mason Mount then entered for Amad Diallo in the 90+6th minute to help lock down the draw.

Bournemouth’s wing play consistently pulled Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw into awkward pockets, with Scott completing 69 passes to keep the hosts ticking. United’s counter-press was effective until the red card, after which Fernandes organised a compact shape, Mainoo tucked inside to shield the back four and Senne Lammens made three important saves.

Key numbers

  • Possession: Bournemouth 55 per cent, Manchester United 45 per cent
  • Expected goals: Bournemouth 1.80, Manchester United 1.77
  • Shots on target: Bournemouth 5, Manchester United 5
  • Corners: Bournemouth 6, Manchester United 8

United’s task now is to navigate Maguire’s suspension while keeping pace with the top two. Bournemouth, having recorded their 15th draw of the campaign, again showed resilience and can take encouragement from the impact of Iraola’s bench ahead of their next outing.
