Sweden are one win from the 2026 World Cup after a 3-1 takedown of Ukraine in Valencia on Thursday, delivered by Viktor Gyökeres under Erik Hamrén’s watch. The Sporting forward settled the semi-final inside 73 minutes with a clinical hat-trick, leaving Serhiy Rebrov’s side chasing shadows despite heavy possession.

Hamrén’s 3-4-2-1 went straight to work. Benjamin Nygren found Gyökeres in the 6th minute and the striker did the rest, giving Sweden the cushion they had lacked throughout a grim group phase. Even when Isak Hien exited in the 37th minute and Carl Starfelt had to slot in cold, the Swedish back line held its shape and trusted the counter.

Ukraine monopolised the ball, 68 percent by the finish, yet lacked incision. Viktor Tsygankov carried most of the threat but Victor Lindelöf and Gustaf Lagerbielke shut down the danger repeatedly. Sweden waited for the next opening and it arrived right after the break: Kristoffer Nordfeldt spotted Gyökeres in the 51st minute, his distribution exploiting the space Ukraine’s press had ignored, and the striker made it 2-0.

Oleksandr Tymchyk’s booking in the 56th minute summed up the frustration. Rebrov went to the bench on the hour, sending on Roman Yaremchuk, Oleksii Gutsulyak and Oleg Ocheretko, but momentum never shifted. Anatoliy Trubin was cautioned in the 71st minute and two minutes later Gyökeres converted from the spot to complete the hat-trick. Nordfeldt then collected a yellow of his own for time wasting in the 75th minute as Sweden managed the clock.

Hamrén freshened the wide lanes in the 77th minute with Daniel Svensson and Lucas Bergvall, while Rebrov introduced Matvii Ponomarenko in the same window; the Ukrainian substitute finally beat Nordfeldt in the 90th minute for a consolation. By then Sweden had already locked the contest, Anthony Elanga seeing out time before Mattias Svanberg came on at 90+4 minutes to close it down.

Ukraine produced 10 shots and nine corners yet found Nordfeldt in solid form, the goalkeeper ending with three saves and an assist. Sweden matched the shot count with far less of the ball, their 10 attempts including the three Gyökeres put away. The plan was exactly as briefed: compact defence, fast breaks, clinical finishing.

Statistics

  • Shots on target: Ukraine 4, Sweden 4
  • Total shots: Ukraine 10, Sweden 10
  • Possession: Ukraine 68 percent, Sweden 32 percent
  • Corner kicks: Ukraine 9, Sweden 3
  • Saves: Anatoliy Trubin 1, Kristoffer Nordfeldt 3

Sweden now advance to the play-off final with Gyökeres in irresistible form and Hamrén vindicated for keeping faith with this direct blueprint after a flat qualifying campaign. Ukraine must process how so much control produced so little edge before their Nations League commitments return.
