Bayern München 4-3 Real Madrid, and the Allianz Arena exhaled at last. Vincent Kompany’s side are into the Champions League semi-finals on a 6-4 aggregate, Real Madrid sent home by Jamal Musiala’s spark off the bench and Michael Olise’s finish in the 90th minute.
The tie went berserk inside the opening exchanges. Arda Güler scored in the 1st minute, Bayern replied through Aleksandar Pavlović in the 6th minute after Joshua Kimmich picked the pass. Güler struck again in the 29th minute and for a while Xabi Alonso’s 4-3-3 had Bayern stretched. Dayot Upamecano surged out of the back line to clip Harry Kane in for the 38th-minute equaliser, only for Kylian Mbappé to restore Madrid’s lead in the 42nd minute from Vinícius Júnior’s assist. Even before all that, the match record had already listed two yellows and a red for Güler five minutes before kick-off, a clerical oddity that mirrored the chaos to come.
Kompany doubled down on his 4-2-3-1 at half-time, bringing on Alphonso Davies for the cautioned Josip Stanišić. Bayern’s control tightened once Musiala replaced Serge Gnabry in the 61st minute, his capacity to turn in tight areas dragging Madrid’s midfield deeper and deeper. Alonso countered with Eduardo Camavinga for Brahim Díaz in the 62nd minute, yet Madrid’s tempo faded the longer Bayern’s possession cycles stretched.
The night finally turned on time management gone wrong. Camavinga earned a yellow card for a foul in the 78th minute, then another for time wasting in the 86th minute, sending Madrid down to ten men. Musiala immediately exploited the vacancy, threading Luis Díaz through for the 89th-minute goal that levelled on the night and put Bayern ahead on aggregate. Kane then dropped off the front line in the 90th minute, slipping a short ball to Olise, whose low finish completed the comeback just before Alonso replaced Güler with Franco Mastantuono and introduced Thiago Pitarch for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Kimmich dictated the midfield with 118 pass attempts and the assist that set Bayern moving after the early shock. Pavlović matched his rhythm, screening transitions while Davies’ introduction restored natural width on the left. Upamecano’s passing and front-foot defending underpinned the comeback, and Kane’s contribution went beyond his goal, ending with the decisive assist for Olise. For Madrid, Güler’s double at least confirmed his emergence, Mbappé remained ruthless, but Alonso’s team lost shape once Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham were forced to defend the box for long stretches.
Numbers:
- Bayern held 69 percent possession and fired 21 shots, nine on target.
- Real Madrid produced 12 shots, five on target, and forced Manuel Neuer into two saves.
- Bayern completed 565 of 640 passes at 88 percent accuracy, Madrid 230 of 294 at 78 percent.
Bayern now wait for the semi-final draw and turn quickly toward their Bundesliga schedule before Europe resumes. Real Madrid are left to salvage their domestic push, Alonso needing a reset ahead of the weekend while monitoring Camavinga’s suspension headache.
