Brighton & Hove Albion eased past Chelsea 3-0 at the Amex Stadium on 21 April, a result that deepens Enzo Marescaâs troubles while Fabian HĂŒrzeler strengthens his hold on a Europa League place.
Ferdi Kadioglu scored in the 3rd minute to punish Chelseaâs five-man defence before it settled. Brightonâs 4-2-3-1 shape allowed the full backs to advance, Pascal GroĂ set the passing rhythm and the visitorsâ 5-4-1 sat deep for most of the first half. Wesley Fofana collected a yellow card in the 45+1st minute, prompting Maresca to replace him with Alejandro Garnacho at the interval. HĂŒrzeler responded with Joel Veltman for Mats Wieffer at the restart, reinforcing Brightonâs right flank against Marc Cucurella.
The hostsâ composure told again when Georginio Rutter slipped Jack Hinshelwood through in the 56th minute for the second goal. Yankuba Minteh was booked in the 58th minute for a foul, yet Brightonâs midfield box of GroĂ, Carlos Baleba, Hinshelwood and the roaming Kadioglu continued to deny Chelsea any route through MoisĂ©s Caicedo. Liam Delap battled on his own up front, RomĂ©o Lavia made way for DĂĄrio Essugo in the 73rd minute and Marc Guiu entered a minute earlier, but Chelsea never threatened.
Brightonâs bench sealed the win. Maxim De Cuyper replaced Minteh in the 77th minute, and his cross in the 90th minute allowed Danny Welbeckâon for Rutter in the 83rd minuteâto sweep in the third. Matt OâRiley took Hinshelwoodâs place in the 90+2nd minute, moments before Josh Acheampong relieved Malo Gusto for Chelsea.
Key numbers told the same story: Brighton produced 15 shots to Chelseaâs 6, enjoyed 53 percent possession and generated 2.14 expected goals. Chelsea failed to hit the target, finishing with an xG of 0.37. Robert SĂĄnchez made four saves, while Bart Verbruggen did not have to make one.
Brighton move to 50 points in sixth, two ahead of the pack chasing Europa League qualification and keeping the pressure on the teams above them. Chelsea remain on 48 points in seventh after a fifth straight league defeat, leaving Maresca urgently seeking a response to protect their hopes of returning to Europe.
