Arsenal beat Newcastle 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to keep control of the Premier League title race, moving three points clear of Manchester City with four matches remaining for Mikel Arteta’s side. Arteta kept faith with his familiar 4-3-3 while Eddie Howe set Newcastle in a 4-1-4-1, and the contest was decided inside nine minutes.
Kai Havertz slipped a pass into Eberechi Eze in the ninth minute, allowing the forward to finish for the night’s only goal. That early strike let Arsenal dictate the tempo. The wide rotation paid off, with Noni Madueke starting on the right and Declan Rice dropping alongside Martín Zubimendi to stifle Newcastle’s transitions before the visitors could settle.
Havertz departed in the 34th minute, with Viktor Gyökeres leading the press against Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw, and Eze made way for Gabriel Martinelli in the 53rd minute as Martin Ødegaard drifted wider to retain control. Newcastle enjoyed 55 percent possession but ran into a disciplined back line marshalled by Piero Hincapié and William Saliba, while David Raya saved the three on-target efforts that did arrive. Bruno Guimarães steered the visitors until Nick Woltemade replaced him in the 75th minute, and Bukayo Saka’s introduction for Madueke in the 81st minute helped Arsenal lock down the flanks alongside a late cameo from Myles Lewis-Skelly.
A flurry of cards marked the second half. Dan Burn was booked in the 57th minute, Martinelli followed in the 71st, Nick Pope collected a caution in the 74th for a foul on Gyökeres, and Rice went into the book in the 86th minute. Anthony Elanga still replaced Joe Willock moments later, but Arsenal’s shape held firm.
Key stats: Arsenal attempted 11 shots to Newcastle’s 13, with shots on target finishing 4-3. Newcastle edged possession 55 percent to 45, while expected goals read 0.64 for Arsenal and 0.91 for Newcastle. Corners ended 7-2 to the hosts.
Arsenal stay top with 73 points and a WLLWW league run, maintaining a three-point cushion over Manchester City despite the injury concerns for Havertz and Eze. Newcastle remain 14th on 42 points after losing four of their last five league matches, leaving Howe searching for a response before the next round.
