Matías Fernández-Pardo kept Lille on course for the Champions League on 26 April, his 26th-minute penalty enough for a 1-0 victory over Paris FC at Stade Jean Bouin. Bruno Génésio’s 4-2-3-1 looked assured as Lille collected a fourth win in five league matches, while Stéphane Gilli’s side unravelled amid ill-discipline and blunt finishing.
Romain Perraud earned the decisive spot kick with an underlapping run, allowing Fernández-Pardo to beat Kevin Trapp from twelve yards. Lille’s early grip came from Benjamin André and Ngal'ayel Mukau, who pinned back Marshall Munetsi and Pierre Lees-Melou before Paris FC could settle. Moustapha Mbow’s booking in the 10th minute underlined how ragged the hosts were whenever Lille pierced the first line.
Gilli responded at half-time by introducing Alimami Gory and Rudy Matondo for Munetsi and Maxime Lopez. The tweak pushed Jonathan Ikoné into narrower spaces and asked Matondo to run at Thomas Meunier, but centre-backs Aïssa Mandi and Nathan Ngoy read the danger calmly. Matondo’s direct bursts produced territory rather than shots, and Berke Özer needed only two straightforward saves to protect the lead.
Lille remained dangerous in transition. Félix Correia and Hákon Arnar Haraldsson kept finding pockets between the lines, forcing Diego Coppola and Adama Camara to chase. Ciro Immobile stayed isolated until he made way for Luca Koleosho in the 69th minute, and Génésio re-energised the press by introducing Ethan Mbappé nine minutes later.
Paris FC’s frustration boiled over late on. Lees-Melou collected two yellow cards for dissent in the 85th minute and was dismissed, before Ilan Kebbal (90'), Gory (90+4') and Ngoy (90+4') joined an already lengthy list of bookings. Lille simply managed the closing stages and saw out a crucial away win.
For Lille, André’s authority in midfield and the structure supplied by Mukau offered Génésio a template to trust down the stretch. Paris FC, meanwhile, saw Gory’s stoppage-time yellow encapsulate a performance short on composure at both ends.
Statistics:
- Possession: Paris FC 47 percent, Lille 53 percent
- Shots on target: Paris FC 2, Lille 4
- Expected goals: Paris FC 1.06, Lille 1.70
- Corner kicks: Paris FC 7, Lille 3
- Cards: Paris FC six yellows and one red; Lille three yellows
Lille stay third on 57 points, level with Lyon but ahead on tiebreakers in the race for Europe. Paris FC remain 12th on 38 points, still with work to do before safety is secure. Génésio can now focus on protecting that Champions League ticket, while Gilli must rebuild his side’s discipline for a demanding May schedule.
