Wolves 1-1 Sunderland: Pereira’s rescue mission stalls against ten men
Wolves were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with ten-man Sunderland at Molineux on Saturday, leaving Vítor Pereira’s side still marooned at the foot of the Premier League. The point nudges Sunderland to 47 and keeps them comfortable in mid-table, while Wolves remain rooted on 18, needing an improbable surge in the final three fixtures to drag themselves out of trouble.
Pereira stayed with his conservative 3-4-2-1, Santiago Bueno flanked by Yerson Mosquera and Toti, against R. Le Bris’ 4-2-3-1 built around Granit Xhaka. The opening exchanges favoured Sunderland, their double pivot setting the tempo, and a clean pattern emerged: Sunderland waiting for transitions, Wolves trying to feed Tolu Arokodare early.
The visiting plan paid off in the 17th minute. Xhaka spotted Nordi Mukiele’s run, slipped the pass, and Mukiele finished past Daniel Bentley. Sunderland led, 11 v 11, without needing volume in attack, just precision from their captain.
Chaos followed. In the 23rd minute VAR intervened, and one minute later Daniel Ballard walked for violent conduct after tugging at Arokodare during a set-piece tussle. With Sunderland down to ten, Le Bris dropped Trai Hume into the back line out of possession and trusted Xhaka to marshal the midfield on his own.
Wolves dominated possession after the dismissal yet kept running into Robin Roefs. Adam Armstrong twice made him work, Mosquera threatened from a recycled corner, but the equaliser did not arrive before the break. Pereira responded at half-time, withdrawing Pedro Lima and introducing Rodrigo Gomes to provide natural width on the right.
The change sharpened Wolves’ angles. Rodrigo hugged the chalk, Hugo Bueno attacked the far side, and parity arrived in the 54th minute. Hugo Bueno supplied the final ball, Santiago Bueno converted from close range, centre-back to centre-back to finally crack Roefs.
Le Bris reshuffled on 72 minutes, sending on Dennis Cirkin, Habib Diarra and Wilson Isidor to staff the wide channels and offer an outlet. Brobbey, already booked in the 45+2 minute, made way to ensure Sunderland finished with a focal point who could run the channels rather than simply contest aerial duels against an extra centre-back. Xhaka collected a yellow card in the 56th minute for protesting, yet he continued to dictate Sunderland’s clearances and timed rests. Cirkin’s 81st-minute booking reflected the strain but also the discipline: Sunderland allowed only seven shots on target across the 90.
Roefs embodied that resistance. The goalkeeper produced six saves, commanding his area and even absorbing a caution in the 90+2 minute for dissent during the final siege. Pereira chased the win, introducing Angel Gomes for Hugo Bueno in the 78th minute, then Tom Edozie for Arokodare in the 90+3 minute, yet Wolves’ finishing again betrayed them. Their 1.72 expected goals returned just one goal, and their 58 percent possession rarely turned into high-quality chances between the posts.
Three days on, the table is unforgiving. Wolves remain two points adrift of 19th-placed Burnley with three to play. Sunderland stay 12th on 47 points, keeping the league’s top half within reach while Le Bris carefully manages minutes before their next assignment. Expect Pereira to double down on finishing drills this week, knowing the margins are thin in the run-in.
