Here we go: Rennes 2-1 Paris FC, three points last night at Roazhon Park to keep F. Haise’s side fifth and pressing Lyon for the final Champions League slot.
Result and context. A scoreless first half masked Rennes’ control. They posted 51 percent possession and already had the shot volume that would finish at fourteen, nine of them from inside the box. Yet S. Gilli’s visitors survived to the break and tried to tilt the midfield by sending Maxime Lopez on for Ilan Kebbal at the restart.
Turning point. The switch paid fast dividends. Willem Geubbels scored in the 53rd minute, capitalising on the one clear look Paris FC forced all night. That lone shot on target became the platform for Gilli to retreat into a mid-block. Haise’s answer came on sixty-six and sixty-seven minutes, Breel Embolo and Arnaud Nordin introduced for Ludovic Blas and Sebastian Szymański. Within eight minutes the game flipped: Esteban Lepaul levelled in the 74th minute after Quentin Merlin found him, and Embolo completed the comeback in the 75th minute, fed instantly by Nordin.
Tactical insight. Haise kept his 4-3-3 narrow, asking Mahdi Camara to screen while Valentin Rongier stepped up to engage Pierre Lees-Melou. Merlin’s aggression from left-back consistently opened the lane for Lepaul to attack the inside channel. Once Embolo arrived, Rennes had a focal point to pin Diego Coppola and Moustapha Mbow, freeing Lepaul for that equaliser and leaving Embolo to attack the area for the winner. Gilli chased parity by turning to his bench: Ciro Immobile replaced Geubbels in the 71st minute, Adama Camara came on for Hamari Traoré in the 76th, Jonathan Ikoné followed a minute later for Alimami Gory, and Vincent Marchetti relieved Lees-Melou on 83 minutes. The response never came. Paris FC still closed with a single effort on target and Immobile collected a yellow card in the 89th minute as frustration set in.
Key performers. Lepaul’s movement and three shots on target justified Haise’s faith. Embolo delivered the decisive contribution nine minutes after stepping off the bench. Nordin’s cameo mattered twice, first in the assist column, then as the extra presser that forced hurried clearances. Merlin’s assist closed a performance that included eleven duels and three tackles. For Paris FC, Trapp’s three saves kept them afloat until the double concession, but up front Geubbels’ goal was isolated.
Game management. Haise locked the result by introducing Djaoui Cissé for Lepaul in the 87th minute and bringing on Alidu Seidu for Mahamadou Nagida in the 76th to stiffen the right. Rennes saw out eight corners to two by simply keeping Paris FC penned in. Gilli’s wave of substitutes could not alter the rhythm, their pass accuracy of eighty percent meaningless without penetration.

Next steps. Rennes climb to fifty-nine points, one behind Lyon, and Haise will expect the same impact from his bench when the run-in continues. Paris FC stay on forty-one points in mid-table and now need a response to avoid slipping out of the top half. For more on the weekend picture across France, check Angers vs Strasbourg.
