Manchester United locked third place in the Premier League with a 3-0 win at Brighton last night, Bruno Fernandes breaking the competition’s single-season assist record and then scoring to finish the job.

Fernandes supplied Patrick Dorgu in the 33rd minute, the pass that delivered assist number 21 and settled the United midfield into a controlled rhythm. Amad Diallo created the second, releasing Bryan Mbeumo to score in the 44th minute. The restart brought the knockout blow: Dorgu returned the favour for Fernandes in the 48th minute, a combination confirmed by VAR in the 50th minute, and Ruben Amorim’s side could manage the evening from there.

Amorim kept faith with the familiar 4-2-3-1, Mason Mount sliding alongside Kobbie Mainoo to steer United’s possession share of 49 percent with purpose, and Diallo drifting inside to overload Brighton’s first line. Dorgu justified his inclusion high on the left with a goal, an assist and three shots on target before Shea Lacey replaced him in the 62nd minute. Amorim then locked the game down with a triple change on 74 minutes, introducing Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and Tyler Fletcher, while Luke Shaw handed over to Tyrell Malacia in the 82nd minute.

F. Hürzeler also set Brighton out in a 4-2-3-1 but the hosts never found the precision to tilt the match. Pascal Groß and Diego Gómez saw plenty of the ball yet the Seagulls finished with 13 shots and only two on target, plus the rare sight of zero corners. Hürzeler reacted quickly, sending on Yankuba Minteh for Maxim De Cuyper in the 46th minute and then rolling three changes in the 59th minute, but even when Solly March and Carlos Baleba injected energy the scoreline was already gone. Georginio Rutter’s arrival in the 74th minute could not unsettle a centre-back pairing led by Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez, and Senne Lammens made two routine saves to protect a clean sheet.

Mainoo collected the only caution in the 45+3 minute, yet his grip in midfield, partnered with Mount’s pressing and Fernandes’s four key passes, ensured Brighton could not exploit their slight edge in possession. The Amex crowd found hope in Baleba’s surges, Hürzeler will appreciate his cameo, but the evening underlined the distance Amorim has put between these sides since taking charge.

Stats: Brighton 13 shots to United’s 11; shots on target 2-7; possession 51-49; expected goals 0.81-1.82; corners 0-3.

United close the season on 71 points and can now plan a Champions League campaign with a settled spine and Fernandes still dictating. Brighton stay eighth, ticket punched for the Conference League, and Hürzeler’s focus shifts to summer recruitment and pre-season integration.
